Beginning in 1938, the Swiss PTT began issuing an annual semi-postal stamp or set coincident with Swiss National Day, August 1. Each year specific charitable goals are established for the non-postal portion of the stamps' value. In 1938, for example, the charitable proceeds were used to benefit needy Swiss citizens overseas.
